( Atitlan Lake 1,933 – View of the volcanoes from aboard, crossing Lake Atitlan from Panajachel. At that time, this was the only ship available )
In 1933, Aldous Huxley was at work on the novel that would become Eyeless in Gaza. However, struggling with the writing, Huxley abandoned himself to travel, according to biographer Sybille Bedford. Huxley and his wife, Maria, left Liverpool in January 1933, and traveled to the West Indies on cruise ship Britannic. They left the ship in Kingston, Jamaica, and traveled to Honduras and Guatemala, where they persuaded coffee plantation owner Roy Fenton to take them by mule to his land in Mexico.
Huxley and his wife returned to New York by May. The coffee plantation visit, and many other stories, Huxley recorded in Beyond the Mexique Bay.
( In his 1934 – first edition – travel book Beyond the Mexique Bay, Aldous Huxley compared Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan to Italy’s Lake Como )

Aldous Huxley
“The italian body of water (Lake Como) touches the limit of the permissibly picturesque. Atitlan, however, is Como with the additional embellishment of several immense volcanoes. It is really too much of a good thing.”

The Hummingbird and The Mayans
According to the mayan culture, The Hummingbird is a messenger between Gods and humans. After creating the world, the gods realized that a messenger was needed to carry their wishes to humans. They took a small arrow and blew it so that it would fly. The arrow flew but it came to life, it became a small bird that they called Ts’ unu’ um (Piece of Jade).
The Popol Vuh says that before the creation of the human species, there was only water in the world. All was silence and darkness. Suddenly, a drop of light made the dark light up, made the water move and creation form. From that same drop of water the colors blue, red, yellow and green were formed, which covered the hummingbird. The sign of a hummingbird has a powerful spiritual meaning, making it an icon in pre-hispanic cosmoogony.
The Hummingbirds is the smallest bird but it is the only one can fly backwards, in addition to being able to make sudden changes in its directions of flight like no other. The hummingbird can reach speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. They are of great importance for the ecosystems of the american continent, they are pollinating agents of tropical forests.
